US Allows India to Temporarily Purchase Russian Oil Amidst West Asia Conflict

The US Treasury has authorized temporary purchases of Russian oil by India to ease global supply amidst ongoing conflicts in West Asia. This short-term measure aims to quickly move oil stocks and stabilize prices, without greatly benefiting Russia financially.

The United States has granted a temporary waiver for India to purchase Russian oil, as announced by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. This decision comes as an effort to alleviate global supply shortages during ongoing West Asia conflicts. The Treasury's move is described as a short-term measure to maintain market stability.

Secretary Bessent highlighted that India has previously complied with US requests to halt Russian oil purchases, substituting with American oil. The temporary permission will enable India to tap into Russian oil currently at sea, easing the immediate supply gap without significantly boosting Russia's economy.

Energy Secretary Chris Wright emphasized this strategic maneuver as critical for sustaining market flow during the conflict, particularly amid increased tensions with Iran. The Department of Treasury clarified this adjustment is exclusively for crude oil already loaded on ships, ensuring no long-term policy shifts regarding Russia. The temporary measure complements recently lifted tariffs on India's energy imports, following New Delhi's commitment to US energy purchases.
