Mizoram's government announced a significant investment in turning the state energy self-sufficient, following a substantial Rs 685.93 crore expenditure on external electricity procurement last year. Presently, internal power generation remains limited, with only 41 MU generated from hydro and solar sources combined.

Power Minister F Rodingliana conveyed these details during an assembly session, highlighting the revenue shortfall with only Rs 245.33 crore collected from consumers despite the hefty procurement expenses. However, he emphasized the state's success in maintaining zero debt from these transactions.

In a bid to reverse this trend, Chief Minister Lalduhoma has initiated several new power projects, including the Tuirini hydro project, expected to produce 24 MW. The government is also pushing forward with detailed plans for the 132 MW Tuivai project in Saitual district.
