STMicroelectronics Embraces Automation to Transform Chip Manufacturing
STMicroelectronics announced a transformative strategy to retrain workers and integrate robots in its older chip factories, addressing industry challenges without plant closures. The move is part of a broader restructuring plan that seeks to enhance efficiency and leverage Europe's industrial strengths amid global competition.
STMicroelectronics, a leading European semiconductor company, revealed its plan to utilize robots and retrain staff in its aging chip manufacturing facilities to prevent closures. This initiative aims to navigate industry challenges and enhance efficiency.
At the SEMI-hosted semiconductor conference in Sopot, Poland, Thomas Morgenstern, head of manufacturing at STMicro, presented a video showcasing a robot placing a silicon wafer carrier into a machine. The company plans to deploy over one hundred humanoids to take over repetitive tasks within a couple of years.
The restructuring plan, which includes the potential exit of 5,000 employees, faces challenges, particularly in Italy. However, STMicro is committed to avoiding the closure of its European facilities by using automation and training to shift workers into higher-skilled roles.
