In a detailed briefing to the Lok Sabha, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the significant strides made by Indian Railways during the fiscal year 2025-26. A record 76,352 special trains were operated, and 25,000 daily trains signify a robust network catering primarily to the poor and middle class, bolstered by a substantial budgetary allocation championed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Minister proudly announced that the Railways achieved an impressive cargo transportation milestone, moving 1,670 million metric tons, which is a 3.25% increase over the previous year. This includes notable upticks in the transportation of iron ore and cement by 6.73% and 3.41%, respectively. Importantly, the fiscal year saw the lowest consequential accidents in five decades, underscoring the safety improvements in the sector.
Furthermore, Vaishnaw outlined the establishment of 76 advanced passenger holding areas across India, incorporating amenities like seating, drinking water, and enhanced security measures to alleviate platform congestion. The flagship facility at New Delhi Railway Station already demonstrates significant reduction in congestion while boosting passenger comfort with modern features and technologies.
