NDA leaders staged a protest in Parliament on Friday following the defeat of the 131st Constitution (Amendment) Bill, 2026, in the Lok Sabha. The bill aimed at implementing Women's Reservation from the 2029 general elections was rejected, as it failed to meet the required two-thirds majority with 298 votes for and 230 against.
As the results were announced by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, BJP MP Giriraj Singh lamented the bill's defeat as a setback for 'Nari Shakti', pointing fingers at the opposition for their role in its downfall. Union Minister Ramdas Athawale and BJP MP Ravi Shankar Prasad criticized the Congress, describing them as 'anti-women' and suspecting their stance against women's empowerment.
Countering the BJP's accusations, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi stated that the opposition successfully thwarted what he termed an 'attack on the Constitution'. Meanwhile, LJP(R) MP Arun Bharti called out the opposition for their alleged insincerity towards women's empowerment, questioning their political trajectory concerning women's rights in the country.
