Government Plans ECLGS-like Initiative Amid West Asia Crisis
The government is considering an ECLGS-type mechanism to offer credit guarantee and collateral-free lending during the West Asia crisis. The initiative, inspired by the ECLGS launched in 2020 for MSMEs during COVID-19, was discussed during the CII MSME Leadership Summit 2026 by DPIIT's Ateesh Kumar Singh.
The government is weighing the possibility of introducing an ECLGS-type mechanism that would offer credit guarantee cover and collateral-free lending to businesses affected by the West Asia crisis, as revealed by a government official on Thursday.
The plan echoes the Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS), introduced in 2020 under the Aatmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan, designed to assist Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and other eligible businesses grappling with the economic challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
At the CII MSME Leadership Summit 2026, Ateesh Kumar Singh, Additional Secretary in the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), highlighted the potential mechanism which includes collateral-free lending, credit guarantee cover, restructuring options, and moratoriums. Feedback is being sought from the industry on these proposals.
