During a special session on Thursday, the Uttar Pradesh Assembly moved to censure the opposition concerning the Women's Reservation Bill. Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya launched a scathing critique of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and Congress, likening them to two sides of the same coin and accusing them of shifting their stance opportunistically. Maurya highlighted their historical opposition as anti-Dalit, anti-backwards, and anti-poor, claiming they have now adopted an anti-women position.
Both Maurya and Minister Danish Azad Ansari emphasized that the opposition's actions have undermined efforts for women's empowerment. Ansari affirmed that their obstructionist tactics have been exposed, showcasing their alleged commitment to hindering women's development. He expressed confidence in the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) majority victory in the upcoming West Bengal elections, framing the contest as the public versus Mamata Banerjee.
Additionally, Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak attacked the SP and Congress for their continued opposition to women's reservation since independence, asserting that these actions have come to light during current deliberations on women's empowerment in the legislature. This criticism was juxtaposed with SP MLA Naseem Solanki's acknowledgment of her position gained through her party, despite allegations of mishandling women's safety issues during recent by-elections.
