ISRO Strengthens Space Ties with Russia Through Semi-Cryogenic Engine Collaboration

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is forging ahead with its mission to bolster India’s space capabilities by entering into a technical collaboration with Russia's Roscosmos for semi-cryogenic engines. This initiative was revealed in ISRO's Annual Report 2025-26, highlighting important discussions held in Moscow between the agencies.

The semi-cryogenic engine, central to India's future heavy-lift launch vehicles, employs refined kerosene and liquid oxygen to deliver enhanced thrust and efficiency. This technological leap is anticipated to significantly improve India’s capacity to carry heavier payloads and undertake ambitious deep space missions.

While ISRO is simultaneously developing its own semi-cryogenic engines, accelerating through international collaboration could bridge crucial technological gaps. Though timelines remain undisclosed, the approval process for a draft contract is already underway, marking significant progress in securing these engines.
