In a distressing incident reflecting the dark side of dowry practices in India, a 23-year-old woman from Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh has died under suspicious circumstances. Police have apprehended eight members of her in-laws' family on charges of dowry harassment and murder.
The woman, identified as Doli, was discovered hanging from a ceiling hook at her in-laws' residence in Kathahi village. Although the scene initially suggested suicide, Doli's family alleges she was murdered to appear as such. This tragic event took place barely five months after her marriage on November 29, 2025.
The accusations gained weight when Doli's grandfather, Lalji Yadav, filed a complaint stating that substantial dowry demands were made during her marriage, including Rs 7 lakh and 20 grams of gold. Allegations further claim that harassment over dowry continued even after these demands were met.
