India's Payment Revolution: The Shift to Context-Driven Digital Transactions
India's digital payments landscape is shifting from a single predominant method to a context-driven approach. UPI leads regular transactions, while credit and EMIs are increasingly used for daily needs, including utilities. This evolution highlights the changing consumer trust and adaptable payment behaviors aligned with intent and urgency.
India's digital payments narrative is undergoing a significant transformation, as context now plays a crucial role in payment method selection. Recent data from Phi Commerce's 'How India Pays 2025-26' report reveals an active shift in consumer behavior, where Unified Payments Interface (UPI) powers everyday transactions, while credit and Equated Monthly Installments (EMIs) find novel applications.
This transition is particularly notable in education and healthcare sectors, where UPI has overwhelmingly replaced traditional bank payments. With education transactions at an 88% UPI adoption rate and healthcare payments at 72% UPI usage, the digital system's reliability for both convenience and critical transactions is firmly established.
In response to evolving consumer needs, businesses are aligning more closely with payment trends, offering diverse transactional modes. UPI's dominance during the day and credit card use in the evenings highlight a 'time-of-day economy,' emphasizing speed by day and financial flexibility at night. Experts point to this shift as a signal of India's burgeoning 'digital-first, but not digital-only' economy.
