India's solar capacity witnessed a significant boost in 2025 with the addition of a record-breaking 44 gigawatts, bringing the total capacity to 150 GW. The Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy highlighted this notable achievement in response to an appeal from a Thane-based NGO, NatConnect, on Earth Day.
Major initiatives such as PM Surya Ghar, PM-KUSUM, and the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes have fueled this remarkable growth. As a result, India is now among the global solar leaders, surpassing countries like the United States but trailing behind the European Union and China in solar capacity.
NatConnect director B N Kumar emphasized the need for a 'mass solar mission' modeled after the Swachh Bharat campaign, to further decentralize clean energy and reduce the nation's heavy reliance on crude oil imports. This vision aims to make solar energy a people-driven movement, ensuring energy security for the future.
