In a landmark decision that reshapes the contours of a long-standing religious dispute, the Indore Bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court has declared that the Bhojshala complex is predominantly a Hindu site. The court recognized the structure as built by King Bhoj, granting the Hindu side exclusive rights to worship there.
The verdict partially nullified a previous order from April 2003 by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), which had allowed Muslim prayers on the premises. The High Court's judgment has sparked fresh debates as it suggests bringing back the historical idol of Maa Saraswati from the British Museum, urging the government to consider facilitating its return.
Furthermore, the court proposed allocating alternative land to the Muslim community for their religious practices. Despite the ruling, Muslim representatives, led by Dhar Shahar Qazi Waqar Sadiq, have expressed their intent to challenge this decision in the Supreme Court. The Bhojshala dispute, a symbol of religious contention between Hindus and Muslims, continues to evolve.
