A 26-year-old married woman died under suspicious circumstances here, with her family alleging that her husband and in-laws assaulted and hanged her for not giving birth to a son, police said on Thursday.

The police added that the prima facie case appeared to be one of suicide.

The woman's body was recovered on Thursday, while the incident took place on Wednesday in Nagla Rupi village under the jurisdiction of Awagarh police station, they said.

Kirti Devi is survived by her two daughters, aged eighteen months and two months.

According to the victim's father, Viresh, Kriti has been allegedly harassed by her in-laws for not bearing a male child. He alleged that her husband and other family members assaulted her and hanged her to death.
