In a spirited start to the Panchayati Raj elections in Himachal Pradesh, voting commenced across 1,293 panchayats at 7 AM on Tuesday. Voters, numbering over 18 lakh, eagerly lined up at polling stations to choose new grassroots representatives for the next five years. According to the State Election Commission, eligible voters include 9,23,215 males, 8,99,766 females, and 49 individuals from other categories.
To ensure peaceful polling, the state administration implemented robust security measures, particularly in sensitive and remote areas. Polling is scheduled to continue until 3 PM, after which counting will start for posts like Pradhan and Ward Members at designated Panchayat headquarters. Results are expected by 5 PM, although remote locations may experience delays.
Counting for higher-level positions such as Panchayat Samiti Members and Zila Parishad seats will take place on May 31, with ballot boxes secured in strong rooms until then. Each voter is casting ballots for multiple posts, emphasizing the election's importance. Voters from all demographics, including first-timers and women, actively participated, underscoring the election’s role in fostering local democracy.
