The local body elections in Punjab, covering 103 municipalities including eight major corporations, recorded a voter turnout of 13.5% by 10 am on Tuesday. Polling commenced at 8 am and is set to conclude at 5 pm, with the counting of votes scheduled for May 29.

This electoral event spans across 1,896 wards in some of Punjab's key cities like Mohali and Bathinda, involving fierce competition among 7,555 candidates. The ruling AAP stands out with the largest number of candidates at 1,801, followed by Congress and BJP.

Security has been tightened with 740 polling booths marked as sensitive. As citizens braved a heatwave to cast votes, the elections hold significant weight for parties like AAP, BJP, Congress, and SAD before the 2027 assembly showdown.
