In a decisive move to stabilize NEET examinations, the Supreme Court on Friday instructed the Centre's Ministry of Education to file an affidavit elaborating on a year-to-year plan devised by the National Testing Agency (NTA). This mechanism aims to embed institutional memory and expertise within the NTA, furthering its capability to efficiently manage NEET processes. The directive, issued by Justices PS Narasimha and Alok Aradhe, emphasizes strengthening the NTA with specialized personnel and expert panels.

The Court expressed concerns regarding the recurrence of examination-related controversies, notably the NEET-UG issues in 2024 and 2026. Highlighting the need for both physical and intellectual resources, the Court mandated the submission of the affidavit within six weeks. During the proceedings, affidavits from the NTA and Dr. K Radhakrishnan, Chair of the High Powered Committee, were scrutinized. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta assured the bench of the Prime Minister's close monitoring of the situation.

However, the bench questioned the failure of the oversight mechanism despite regular meetings by the committee, pointing out the importance of accountability within NTA operations. Justice Narasimha underscored the detrimental impact of diffused responsibility and stressed the urgent need for robust institutional frameworks akin to the country's esteemed UPSC. Emphasizing the emotional toll on students and families, the Court insisted on implementing procedural reforms before the upcoming NEET-UG examination and scheduled further hearings for July.
