Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve has experienced an unprecedented boost in tourism during the 2025-26 tourism year, welcoming over 5.48 lakh visitors, including upwards of 32,000 foreign tourists, official data reveals. This surge underscores the transformation that conservation-centric development can bring to economic progress, as emphasized by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. In a social media post, he lauded this achievement, declaring Kaziranga as one of India's most notable tourism success stories.
Enumerating the park's unprecedented tourist footfall, Sarma noted that visitor numbers soared to 4.68 lakh this year, compared to 4.06 lakh the previous year and 1.55 lakh a decade ago. The count of foreign tourists also jumped from 17,693 to 30,474 within a year—an endorsement of Assam's efforts in building globally appealing tourism infrastructure. Moreover, Sarma emphasized that such rising visitor numbers validate Assam's tourism drive and the state's ability to provide an exceptional tourism experience.
The Chief Minister highlighted sustainable practices that led to zero rhino poaching and increased sightings of notable species, including the golden tiger. Initiatives such as boat safaris and community-driven tourism continue to boost local livelihoods. Sarma also assured that infrastructure like the upcoming Kaziranga Elevated Corridor would enhance wildlife safety and connectivity simultaneously. Kaziranga Park Field Director Sonali Ghosh echoed these sentiments, attributing the tourism success to strategic initiatives and the leadership of Chief Minister Sarma. Historical visits by global dignitaries have further elevated Kaziranga's standing as a premier international travel destination. According to official data, tourism at Kaziranga has steadily surged from 1,55,107 visitors in 2016-17 to today's remarkable figures.
