The Ministry of Home Affairs has designated a Special Court of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in Chhattisgarh's Jagdalpur solely for handling cases related to scheduled offences investigated by the agency. This strategic move, officially announced, seeks to bolster judicial processes, especially in insurgency and organized crime-affected regions.
According to Section 11 of the National Investigation Agency Act, 2008, the notification replaces earlier orders from November 2019, except where actions are already underway. The Special Court, functioning under the Additional Sessions Judge in Jagdalpur, is established in consultation with the Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court and the state government, to exclusively try offences listed under the NIA Act for more effective adjudication.
The court's jurisdiction will span key districts in the Bastar region, namely Bastar (Jagdalpur), Dakshin Bastar (Dantewada), Kondagaon, and Uttar Bastar (Kanker). These areas have historically faced security threats from Left-Wing Extremism (LWE) or Naxalism. This move is expected to streamline legal processes, reduce trial delays, enhance coordination between agencies, and improve conviction rates.
