The Himachal Pradesh High Court has acted upon the media-reported demolition of the historic US Club Gate in Shimla, demanding clarification from the state and city authorities. This step comes after it was noted that the gate was removed during a road-widening project.
A Division Bench led by Chief Justice Gurmeet Singh Sandhawalia and Justice Bipin Chander Negi has issued notices to the Secretary of the Public Works Department and the Municipal Commissioner of Shimla, requiring them to submit detailed accounts of the demolition circumstances.
The court underscored the gate's historical significance due to its traditional construction style and close proximity to Shimla's Ridge, questioning why preservation efforts were not implemented. With the next hearing set for July 29, authorities are to justify this "drastic action" and reveal conservation plans for cultural heritage.
