Top experts at AIIMS Delhi have raised alarms over the critical shortage of platinum-based cancer drugs, Cisplatin and Carboplatin, crucial for treating cancers such as head and neck, lung, ovarian, bladder, and gastrointestinal. These drugs are essential components of cancer treatment protocols, and their scarcity poses a significant threat to patient care.

Prominent surgical oncologists warn that the absence or delay in these essential drugs forces reliance on less effective alternatives, compromising patient survival and increasing recurrence rates. The shortage, attributed to limited raw material availability, has sparked calls for immediate government intervention to accelerate domestic production and maintain reliable supply chains.

The problem is compounded by global supply chain issues, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions impacting the availability of platinum-based raw materials. There is a pressing need for strategic stockpiling and transparent oversight to prevent treatment disruptions and ensure reliable access to these critical chemotherapies for patients across India.
