A near-tragic accident was averted on Thursday when a bus carrying pilgrims encountered a brake failure on the Badrinath National Highway in Chamoli district. The vehicle, transporting devotees back to Haridwar from Badrinath Dham, had its uncontrolled descent halted by a roadside boulder near Benakuli.
The bus contained pilgrims from Jharkhand who had recently completed their pilgrimage to the Himalayan shrine. The brake failure occurred as the vehicle descended the steep mountain road, causing panic among passengers as it neared the edge.
Intervention by the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), led by Inspector Gyan Prakash, was instrumental in evacuating passengers safely after the bus came to an unexpected halt against the rock. Local residents also assisted, commending the prompt rescue efforts. Authorities are now examining vehicle and road safety protocols to avert future incidents.
