The ongoing conflict in West Asia has disrupted Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs) supply, leading to a critical shortage of chemotherapy drugs Cisplatin and Carboplatin in India. The government approved a price hike for essential medicines to combat this issue, threatening cancer treatment continuity and patient outcomes.

The ongoing West Asian conflict has significantly impacted the supply of Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs), causing a critical shortage in pivotal chemotherapy drugs like Cisplatin and Carboplatin in India. This supply chain disruption has compelled the government to authorize a price increase for these essential medications amid rising production costs.

A total of 82 applications for price hikes were submitted due to increased API costs and production expenses, but only four, including Cisplatin and Carboplatin, received approval. The scarcity of these platinum-based cancer treatment drugs has alarmed healthcare experts, as the unavailability poses a severe threat to oncology protocols and patient care.

Medical experts emphasize the detrimental impact of this shortage on cancer treatment, warning that it forces reliance on less effective regimens. Authorities are urged to expedite domestic production and ensure an uninterrupted supply of these life-saving drugs to maintain treatment schedules and improve patient outcomes.
