On Friday, a solemn atmosphere enveloped the Air India Training Academy, as the team observed a two-minute silence, commemorating the one-year anniversary of the tragic plane crash involving Air India Flight 171. The ill-fated Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, on its journey from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, encountered a catastrophic incident just 32 seconds after departure, leading to its fatal descent near Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport.
During a press briefing held to mark the somber occasion, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation Commissioner Banchhanidhi Pani paid heartfelt tributes to the victims. He recalled the immediate and coordinated rescue operations conducted by local and national authorities, reflecting the joint effort in dealing with the aftermath of one of the region's worst aviation disasters. "We pray for peace for the souls lost. The response involved Ahmedabad's fire, health, and engineering departments in tandem with the state and central government," Pani remarked.
Pani detailed the large-scale emergency response, highlighting the deployment of over 90 ambulances, 60 fire units, and heavy machinery. These resources facilitated the evacuation of victims and survivors, including medical students in nearby hostels. He confirmed the ongoing investigation by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, urging continuous support from municipal bodies. The catastrophic event, claiming 260 lives, remains a poignant reminder, as families of victims receive expedited assistance from involved government entities. Notably, former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani was among the prominent figures who perished in this tragedy.
