The International Labour Organization made a significant breakthrough on Friday by adopting the first binding employment standards tailored for gig economy platforms, including ride-hailing, food delivery, and e-commerce services.

In a vote, 406 members supported the convention, while only eight opposed it, with 36 abstaining. This move is a major step towards enhancing labor rights and protections for gig workers, who have long been pushing for equitable pay and improved safety measures.

By establishing this convention, the ILO aims to ensure that global gig workers receive the same social protections and work-related benefits as those in traditional employment sectors.
