On Friday, British High Commissioner Lindy Cameron solemnly honored the victims of the Air India AI-171 crash on its first anniversary in Gujarat. The commemoration marked a year since the tragedy on June 12, 2025, when the aircraft went down shortly after takeoff.

The doomed Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner bound for London Gatwick from Ahmedabad, crashed within seconds of departure, killing 260 people. Those lost included 229 passengers, 12 crew members, and 19 individuals on the ground, marking one of the region's most tragic aviation disasters.

On the anniversary, Air India announced its interim compensation efforts. The airline has made payments to 96% of the families affected, with ongoing efforts to address remaining cases due to documentation issues or disputes. The compensation covers both onboard victims and those injured on the ground.

Air India is now progressing with final compensation, without placing any time constraints on families. The Tata Group also provides additional support through the AI-171 Memorial and Welfare Trust. A separate financial assistance of ₹1 crore was offered to families of the deceased, beyond legal requirements.

The return of personal belongings has been painstakingly executed, with a majority now returned to families of victims in both India and the UK. Digital devices recovered from the crash site are also being distributed.

A robust support structure was mobilized by Tata Group, with 500 volunteers assisting at the crash site. A dedicated helpdesk in Ahmedabad aided affected families, while company leaders offered personal condolences and support.

As the community grapples with the tragedy’s aftermath, investigations into the crash are nearing completion, with findings expected soon. Families have the choice to await this report before finalizing compensation claims.
