A massive fire that broke out near the emergency department of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on Saturday has now reached the fifth floor, according to media reports. It was earlier reported that the fire brigade was finally able to bring the fire under control but it has now spread to the fifth floor of the building. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) comprising of 75 personnel has been reportedly deployed for the rescue operation.

The fire started in the PC block (a non-patient block) near the emergency ward on the 2nd floor.

A total of 44 fire tenders were rushed to the medical institute to carry out operations to douse the fire. The Emergency Lab at AIIMS was shut down due to the fire. Areas which are affected by the fire include Emergency Lab, B block of the area, Ward AB1, and Superspeciality OPD Area of the institute.

The patients were shifted from AB ward (Orthopaedic Unit) to Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences and other safe areas.

According to the sources, the fire started due to a short circuit.  There are no reports of injuries.

The Chief Minister of New Delhi Arvind Kejriwal asked people to maintain calm and allow the Fire Services personnel to do their work. The fire in AIIMS building will be brought under control at the earliest as Fire Service is trying its best to extinguish the fire, he said in a statement.

Huge thick black smoke can be seen coming out of the building in an unconfirmed video posted by a Twitter user.

Former finance minister Arun Jaitley is admitted at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the cardio-neuro center. This unit is however housed in a different building in the complex.

AIIMS is a medical college and medical research public university which was established in 1956. It is one of the biggest and most important hospitals that provides specialty and super-specialty tertiary care services in more than 50 areas.

Further details are awaited.

This is a developing story.
