As sweltering heat grips large swathes of India, including the national capital, concerns have surged over not only the quantity of potable water available but also its quality. According to a survey by LocalCircles, almost 60 percent of respondents are resorting to some kind of water filtration system to ensure drinkable water.
Data from the Union Health Ministry shows alarming figures: 56 fatalities from 24,849 suspected cases of heatstroke between March and May, with 19,189 suspected cases occurring in May alone. These statistics have heightened apprehensions regarding access to and quality of water, especially during such extreme weather conditions.
The LocalCircles survey, which gathered responses from over 22,000 households across 322 districts, revealed that only 4 percent of Indian households surveyed receive drinkable quality water from their local bodies. Conversely, a substantial 60 percent reported using modern water filtration mechanisms.
Despite modest progress, challenges persist; as the ruling Aam Aadmi Party and the main opposition BJP clash over water supply issues in Delhi, residents continue to raise concerns over water quality. Approximately 50 percent of surveyed individuals expressed dissatisfaction with their piped water quality, marking it as either 'average' or 'poor'.
