Around 100 youths training for army recruitment at a private institute in Indore have reportedly fallen ill due to suspected food poisoning, an official disclosed on Wednesday.
This incident followed the tragic deaths of four children at a local shelter home, also suspected to be because of food poisoning. Consequently, the administration has mandated thorough checks of food quality at all residential schools, shelters, and hostels in the area.
Sub-divisional Magistrate Ghanshyam Dhangar reported that about 100 students from five hostels of the Indore Physical Academy in the Chitawad area have experienced symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea over the past two days. Seventy of them were treated within the hostels, while 30 had to be admitted to Government Maharaja Yeshwantrao Hospital. "Approximately 450 youths stay in these hostels, all of whom are training for army recruitment," Dhangar added.
To address the issue, samples of food, foodgrains, and drinking water from these hostels have been collected for testing. In light of the growing food poisoning cases, District Magistrate Ashish Singh has instructed officials to conduct a quality check of food and drinking water across all local residential schools and hostels, with a report due in seven days.
Earlier this week, four children from Shri Yugpurush Dham Bal Ashram succumbed to infections likely caused by food poisoning, with over 40 others currently hospitalized. A high-level committee from the district administration is investigating the functioning of the ashram to determine the cause.
