India Tightens Organ Transplant Regulations for Foreign Nationals

The Union Health Ministry has emphasized the importance of informing foreign nationals visiting India for organ transplants about the country’s guidelines and legal requirements. The ministry has prepared messages for dissemination through immigration and embassies to ensure wide reach. Monitoring of organ transplants involving foreigners has also been urged.

The Union Health Ministry has issued an advisory to the ministries of External Affairs and Home Affairs to inform foreign nationals about India's legal requirements for organ transplants. India's advanced health care has made it a popular destination for these procedures, but proper compliance is crucial, stated Union Health Secretary Apurva Chandra in a letter to top officials.

The ministry has developed scroll messages and other informative materials, asking for their widespread display at airports, immigration websites, and embassy portals. This step aims to address legal queries and ensure that foreign patients adhere to Indian guidelines before undergoing organ transplants.

The letter emphasized that foreign nationals need prior authorization, and only near relatives can be donors. The government has also urged tighter monitoring of such procedures to curb illegal organ trade, urging state and UT governments to ensure transparency and rule adherence.
