Controversial Recommendations on Wegovy Coverage in the Netherlands

Novo Nordisk's much-discussed weight-loss drug, Wegovy, should not be included under the Netherlands' basic insurance, according to a recent advisory by the country's healthcare institute to the Dutch government. The recommendation was based on uncertainties about whether the health benefits justify the drug's high costs.

With an estimated 4 million potential users in the Netherlands, the healthcare institute projected government expenses could soar to approximately 1.3 billion euros ($1.42 billion). While Wegovy has proven effective in weight reduction, the institute emphasized the necessity of more research to fully understand its health benefits.

Another significant concern highlighted was the global shortage of semaglutide, Wegovy's key ingredient, which is also crucial for diabetes treatment. The institute stressed the importance of prioritizing the medicine for those who would gain the most benefit.
