Nine people have been confirmed dead and four remain missing after the British-Norwegian fishing vessel Argos Georgia sank off the Falkland Islands' coast on Monday, according to the boat's owner. A total of 27 crew members were aboard the Saint Helena-flagged vessel, and 14 have so far been found alive, Stig Ervik, CEO of Norway's Ervik Havfiske Holding, informed Reuters.
Ervik stated that the vessel had taken on water, but detailed circumstances remain unclear. The diverse crew included 10 Spaniards, eight Russians, five Indonesians, two Peruvians, and two Uruguayans, all aged between 30 and 58.
While Ervik did not specify which crew members were deceased, he noted that one of the two life rafts available was discovered in a damaged condition. One survivor was found on this raft, while 13 others were on the second raft. The Argos Georgia was located 200 nautical miles east of Stanley, the Falkland Islands’ capital, when it sank. The rescued crew members have been taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital in Stanley for medical evaluations. Search efforts for the missing continue.
