The Union Budget's proposed custom duty exemption on three cancer drugs will enhance their affordability, announced the Union Health Ministry on Wednesday. The Health Ministry had requested this exemption, considering the needs of approximately 27 lakh cancer patients in the country.
The exemption applies to Trastuzumab deruxtecan (for breast cancer or gastroesophageal adenocarcinoma), Osimertinib (for lung cancers with specific mutations), and Durvalumab (for lung and biliary tract cancers). Annual turnover figures for these drugs are substantial, with significant market implications.
Additionally, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman revised custom duty rates on X-ray tubes and flat panel detectors. This adjustment is expected to bolster the domestic medical device sector by enhancing component availability at reduced costs. The National Health Mission's budget has also been increased, reflecting a commitment to improving primary and secondary healthcare infrastructure.
