Eminent filmmaker and social activist Aparna Sen voiced her support for junior doctors protesting at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital following the tragic death of a woman doctor. Sen questioned the initial reports by police and hospital authorities, claiming the woman doctor's 'rape' and murder were initially portrayed as a suicide to her parents.
Despite criticism and slogans from CPI(M) activists, Sen did not back down and addressed a gathering of students and media, raising concerns about the safety and security of female health personnel in the hospital. A civic volunteer had been arrested in connection with the incident.
Sen, along with singer Pallab Kirtania and other activists, participated in a solidarity rally organized by 'Shilpi Sanskritik Kormi Buddhijibi Manch'. The rally commenced from the Netaji Statue in Shyambazar and culminated at R G Kar Hospital's main gate. The Calcutta High Court has transferred the probe into the incident from Kolkata Police to the CBI.
