In a dramatic turn of events, the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday ordered the transfer of the investigation into the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital from the Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
Protests by junior doctors have crippled state healthcare for five days, bringing even emergency departments to a standstill.
The high court criticized the Kolkata Police for inadequate progress and directed immediate handover of the case to CBI. This decision came in response to a petition by the victim’s parents and multiple PILs. State-wide protests, calls for suspension, and demands for resignation have added to the chaos.
