Doctors Protest Over Trainee's Tragic Incident in Kolkata

The Faculty Association of AIIMS, Delhi, has suspended routine OPD and operation theatre services to protest against the alleged rape and murder of a trainee woman doctor at a state-run hospital in Kolkata. Doctors will also hold silent protest marches, demanding a Central Protection Act for safer working conditions.

The Faculty Association of AIIMS (FAIMS), Delhi, declared a suspension of routine OPD and operation theatre services this Saturday, protesting against the alleged rape and murder of a trainee doctor at a Kolkata state-run hospital and the subsequent vandalism of the facility.

Doctors at Safdarjung and RML hospitals will hold silent marches, wearing black ribbons, to show solidarity. In light of the horrific incident at R G Kar Medical College, Kolkata, FAIMS has stressed the need for a 'Central Protection Act' to safeguard medical practitioners.

A recent general body meeting led to a unanimous decision: only emergency medical services, including casualty, ICU, and emergency operation theatres, will remain functional. Patients scheduled for OPD have been informed, and their appointments rescheduled to minimize disruption.

To honor the departed soul from RG Kar Hospital, a prayer meeting and silent protest will be held at Safdarjung Hospital, while RML Hospital faculty will demonstrate their support with a silent protest from 1 pm to 2 pm, donning black ribbons.

The Indian Medical Association announced a nationwide withdrawal of non-emergency services from 6 am on August 17 to 6 am on August 18 as a mark of protest. Essential services and emergency cases will still be attended to ensure patient care remains unaffected.
