At least 14 people from Karbalua village in Odisha's Ganjam district fell ill Monday night after allegedly consuming spurious liquor, police reported on Tuesday.

The affected individuals, experiencing uneasiness and severe vomiting, were initially rushed to a community health centre and later transferred to MKCH Medical College Hospital. Twelve were admitted to the medicine ward, while two were placed in the ICU, according to police officials.

Excise Commissioner Narasingha Bhol and Ganjam district collector Dibyajyoti Parida visited the hospital. 'Some people have been arrested on charges of selling illicit liquor; samples have been sent for laboratory testing,' Parida said. Bhol announced plans to intensify enforcement actions against illegal liquor trade in the area. Meanwhile, Congress MLA Taraprasad Bahinipati has called for a complete ban on country liquor in rural areas.
