The Struggles of a Teenage Amputee in War-Torn Gaza

Teenager Diaa al-Adini was one of the few Palestinians who found a functioning hospital in war-ravaged Gaza after he was wounded by an Israeli strike. However, he had limited time to recover as doctors amputated his arms before he had to flee the medical facility due to an imminent Israeli attack.

Adini, only 15, reached an American field hospital after being displaced again. Many Palestinians like Adini have been forced to move repeatedly across the Gaza Strip during ongoing hostilities, often failing to find safe shelter. The intense conflict began after Hamas militants attacked Israel on Oct. 7, killing 1,200 people according to Israeli authorities.

The war has left Gaza in ruins, with Israeli strikes destroying homes and infrastructure. Despite the grim reality, Adini recalls happier times, such as swimming and playing with friends. He lost close family members and endures the traumatic challenges of war.
