Authorities at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital have deferred the hearing of 51 doctors accused of promoting a culture of intimidation, which could endanger the democratic atmosphere of the institution, an official announced on Wednesday.
The hearing, initially scheduled for Monday, is now likely to be held on Friday, the official added.
The notice, issued on Monday, required the doctors to appear before a committee to prove their innocence of the allegations. Until then, their access to the institution's campus has been restricted unless summoned by the inquiry committee.
The group includes senior residents, house staff, interns, and professors. The decision follows the death of a postgraduate trainee doctor on August 9, an incident marked by allegations of rape and murder and which has resulted in nationwide outrage and protests by junior doctors.
