Embarking on History: The Reverse Voyage to Ancestral Homelands
A unique cruise seeks to reverse the route of the Atlantic Slave Trade by sailing from Brazil to Angola, honoring historical ties and promoting Afro-Brazilian heritage. Initiated by Dagoberto Jose Fonseca, it aims to educate passengers about their past and encourage discussions on reparations for transatlantic slavery.
A groundbreaking cruise is set to make a historical voyage, tracing the reverse route of the Atlantic Slave Trade from Brazil to Angola. This innovative journey, known as 'A Grande Travessia,' is the brainchild of Dagoberto Jose Fonseca, a professor at Sao Paulo's State University.
Set for December 2025, the cruise aims to depart from Santos, Brazil, with planned stops in Rio de Janeiro, Salvador, and finally Luanda, the Angolan capital. The project's goal is not only to commemorate the painful history of transatlantic slavery but also to foster discussions about reparations and the significant contributions of Afro-Brazilian culture.
Promoted by Anielle Franco, Brazil's minister of racial equality, and supported by African and Brazilian authorities, the cruise intends to invite 2,000 passengers, including students, business leaders, and descendants of enslaved Africans. Activities onboard will include workshops and memorial tributes to those who perished during the Middle Passage.
