Mizoram is set to receive a significant boost in healthcare insurance with a new scheme poised to offer beneficiaries coverage of up to Rs 5 lakh per year, as announced by Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Friday.
Initially planned with the backing of a Rs 1,000 crore loan from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the state government now plans to implement the scheme without external borrowing. Instead, internal funding will ensure the scheme's rollout, marking a shift from the current healthcare strategies in place.
Key stakeholders including pensioners, government employees, and private hospitals have been consulted, with the government optimistic about securing agreements soon. This new scheme will stand alongside the existing Mizoram State Health Care Scheme (MSHCS) and the Centre’s Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY), augmenting the healthcare landscape in the region.
