Another Polio Case Confirmed: Pakistan's Struggle Against the Virus Continues

Pakistan has reported its third poliovirus case of 2025, highlighting ongoing challenges in eradicating the crippling disease. Despite extensive vaccination efforts, including campaigns reaching over 45 million children, the persistent spread in regions like Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa poses significant public health concerns.

The third case of poliovirus this year has been confirmed in Pakistan, marking another chapter in the country's ongoing battle against the crippling disease. The case was identified in the Larkana district of Sindh province, according to a statement from the National Institute of Health's Regional Reference Laboratory for Polio Eradication.

This latest case brings Sindh's total to two, with one case also reported in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. With a history of 74 reported cases in the previous year, including a high prevalence in Balochistan and Sindh, combating polio remains a high priority for health authorities.

Efforts to eradicate polio have seen success in mass vaccination campaigns, such as February's nationwide drive that reached 99% of its target. However, the disease persists as Pakistan, alongside Afghanistan, remains one of the few countries where polio is endemic. Vaccine hesitancy, fueled by misinformation, continues to challenge eradication efforts.
