A Child's New Steps: Overcoming Rare Bowleg Deformity

Nine-year-old Afrin, who suffered from a rare bowleg deformity due to congenital pseudoarthrosis and neurofibromatosis type 2, has successfully taken independent steps post-treatment. Experts at Aakash Healthcare combined specialised surgical techniques to overcome challenges, resulting in a significant improvement in her mobility.

Nine-year-old Afrin has taken her first independent steps after a successful surgical intervention at a private hospital, overcoming a rare bowleg deformity. Diagnosed with neurofibromatosis type 2 and congenital pseudoarthrosis of the tibia, Afrin faced severe mobility challenges since birth.

According to Vikram Khanna, Senior Consultant in Orthopaedics at Aakash Healthcare, Afrin's condition persisted even after previous surgeries. Her bones failed to heal properly and had a high risk of fractures due to poor bone quality. The medical team adopted a specialised approach to address these challenges.

The surgery involved removing abnormal tissue growth and applying a bone graft. A Titanium Elastic Nailing System and an Ilizarov external fixator were used to stabilize and align bones, assisting in recovery. Afrin's sister, Neha Perween, expressed joy and shared plans of making Afrin a doctor to help others in the future.
