A confirmed case of the Nipah virus in Malappuram district, Kerala, has set off a series of containment measures as health officials work to prevent further spread. The patient, a 42-year-old woman from Valanchery municipality, is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Perinthalmanna.

State Health Minister Veena George disclosed that 21 samples from close contacts have tested negative. Authorities have formed 25 special teams to track potential contacts. A containment zone has been declared within a three-kilometre radius of the patient's home, with all contacts under observation for 21 days.

Hospitals are under strict orders to follow infection protocols. The public is advised to wear masks and use hand sanitiser, particularly at events like the ongoing 'Ente Keralam' exhibition. Efforts to ascertain the infection's source continue, with a dead cat found in the area being tested.
