Unveiling the Impact: National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission Gains Momentum

The National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission has screened over 5.72 crore individuals, identifying 2.09 lakh with the disease and 16.3 lakh carrying the trait. Launched in July 2023 by Prime Minister Modi, the mission aims to screen seven crore individuals across 17 states by 2025-26.

The National Sickle Cell Anaemia Elimination Mission (NSCAEM) has made significant strides, screening over 5.72 crore people. This effort, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in July 2023, has successfully identified 2.09 lakh diseased and 16.3 lakh traits carriers, according to Union health ministry officials.

Targeting seven crore individuals under 40 in 17 states by 2025-26, the mission is a critical step towards improving diagnosis and care for those affected by sickle cell disease. The government is actively pursuing this goal through awareness and counselling camps initiated on World Sickle Cell Awareness Day.

With participation from governors, chief ministers, and health ministers, over 27,000 camps have engaged 1.7 lakh people, reflecting the nationwide commitment to combating sickle cell anaemia.
