North Korea Cancels Pyongyang Marathon Amid Speculation
North Korea has canceled the Pyongyang marathon without providing an explanation. Tour operators, including Beijing-based Koryo Tours, were informed of the cancellation by North Korean organizers. The marathon, previously an event featuring foreign athletes, could still proceed with local runners despite its international appeal being diminished.
North Korea has unexpectedly canceled the Pyongyang marathon, according to tour agencies promoting the annual event, without offering any reasons for the decision.
Koryo Tours, based in Beijing and a regular organizer of tourist groups to the reclusive nation, reported receiving cancellation notice from North Korean organizers. The marathon, previously open to international athletes who returned to compete in April last year for the first time in six years, had its foreign participation halted.
Rowan Beard, another tour operator familiar with North Korea, speculated that the event might still proceed with North Korean runners. The Pyongyang marathon, known more for its carefully choreographed route, which ends in a stadium filled with enthusiastic local spectators, has been a cultural showcase rather than a competitive sport.
