Rwanda: Skin cancer-causing bleaching cosmetics, expired drugs of Rwf13m seized

A recent joint operation conducted by Rwanda Investigation Bureau, Rwanda National Police, Rwanda Revenue Authority, Rwanda Development Board, Ministry of Commerce, Rwanda Standards Board, and Rwanda Food and Drugs Authority in various parts of the East African country is able to seize assorted skin bleaching merchandises valued at over Rwf13 million.
Several skin lightening products valued at more than Rwf7 million were seized from various shops in the country's eastern districts of Bugesera, Kirehe, Rwamagana, Kayonza, Gatsibo, Nyagatare and Ngoma. Another similar operation was carried out in tandem in the districts of Nyamagabe, Huye, Gakenke, Burera, Rusizi, Muzanze, Gisagara and Rubavu. The operation conducted by the above-mentioned units seized expired medical drugs in Huye and Nyanza valued at over Rwf5 million.
According to The New Times, apart from those expired medical drugs and skin lightening products, various merchandises like more than 3000 pieces of biodegradable polythene bags, expired foodstuff including Blue Band, Yoghurt, biscuits, mayonnaise, sweets, bread and perfumes have also been seized.
"The joint operation is continuous to enforce the law against bleaching lotions, toilet soaps, oils and sprays as well as expired products, plastic bags and other illegal products on the local market," John Bosco Kabera, Commissioner of Police and Rwanda National Police spokesperson opined.
The seized skin lightening products were already being labelled illegal under the ministerial order. There are 1,342 cream and oil brands with hydroquinone and mercury prohibited in Rwanda. With the rapid utilization of these products, the body reduces producing melanin, which increases the risk of skin cancer.
