Trapped at Sea: Hantavirus Outbreak on Luxury Cruise
A suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard the M/V Hondius has resulted in three deaths and has left about 150 passengers stranded at sea. The cruise, initially an Antarctic nature expedition, is now marooned off Cape Verde, while authorities decide on medical evacuation and passenger screening procedures.
A suspected outbreak of hantavirus aboard the luxury cruise ship M/V Hondius has left three passengers dead and about 150 others trapped at sea. The ship, which set out in March from Ushuaia, Argentina, has been denied permission to disembark in Cape Verde amidst escalating health concerns.
Among the deceased are a Dutch couple and a German national. Efforts to evacuate a critically ill British passenger to South Africa for treatment revealed a positive hantavirus diagnosis, raising international concerns about the virus, generally transmitted by rodents, possibly spreading human-to-human.
Cruise operator Oceanwide Expeditions stated that it is in discussions with health authorities about a possible diversion to Las Palmas or Tenerife for passenger screening and medical evacuation. Both South Africa and Cape Verde have issued statements to reassure locals of their safety, as the ship's status remains dire.
