Conflict Ceasefire Clashes: Putin and Zelenskiy at Odds Over WWII Commemorations
President Putin announced a two-day ceasefire to honor Russia's WWII victory, coinciding with national celebrations. Ukraine's President Zelenskiy proposed an earlier truce, highlighting a desire for a more lasting peace. Tensions remained high with threats of retaliation if celebrations were disrupted by Ukraine.
President Vladimir Putin has declared a brief ceasefire in the ongoing conflict with Ukraine, set to coincide with Russia’s World War Two victory celebrations on May 8-9. The move was countered by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who proposed an earlier pause starting on May 5-6, emphasizing the importance of human life over anniversary commemorations.
While Russia's Defence Ministry confirmed the truce, they warned of severe retaliation should Ukraine disrupt the events. The ministry assured the safety of celebrations but made clear that any hostility would lead to a massive missile attack on Kyiv. Meanwhile, Zelenskiy highlighted the lack of Russian response to calls for a prolonged ceasefire, announcing Ukraine's intent to respect a ceasefire from May 5 midnight.
This truce follows a failed ceasefire attempt during Orthodox Easter. The situation remains tense as Ukraine increases drone attacks within Russia, complicating the commemorations which will proceed without military displays due to security concerns.
