The African National Congress (ANC) National Executive Committee has shown solidarity with President Cyril Ramaphosa amid the ongoing 'Farmgate' scandal. This scandal involves cash being stolen from his property in 2020. The public broadcaster, SABC, reported that this prominent committee is backing Ramaphosa’s decision to legally challenge an independent panel report recommending action against him.
Earlier conversations had swirled around potential impeachment proceedings, especially after the constitutional court revived the process last week. Calls for Ramaphosa's resignation were met with resistance from top ANC officials who considered these demands opportunistic. They argued there was no legal mandate from the court requiring Ramaphosa to step down.
Having led the nation since 2018, Ramaphosa has consistently denied any misconduct related to the case. The ANC plans to brief the media around 0800 GMT regarding resolutions from the NEC meeting, conveying a united front while addressing the scandal's implications.
