The head of the World Health Organization has called for an immediate ceasefire in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, aimed at containing an escalating Ebola outbreak amidst ongoing conflict. The unrest is causing mass displacement, contributing to the spread of the disease in overcrowded camps.

WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, highlighted the crisis during his announcement. 'Eastern DRC now faces a catastrophic collision of disease and conflict, with the Ebola outbreak in Ituri province outpacing the response,' he said. Cases have surged with over 900 suspected cases and 200 suspected deaths reported across three provinces.

Efforts to combat the outbreak are hampered by shortages in protective equipment and community distrust, affecting frontline health workers. Aid groups are stressing the urgent need for increased infection prevention measures as the crisis deepens, with ongoing violence complicating humanitarian efforts.
